About Black Diamond Software

Black Diamond Software, Inc. was founded in 1990 by Richard Duncan whose passion for skiing inspired our company’s name. For the first few years, Mr. Duncan led development projects for some of the most prestigious financial services firms in New York. In 1993, Randy Howie and Mr. Duncan began to partner informally on many engagements. Mr. Howie provided mentoring and consulting services for clients interested in object-oriented technology.

Both partners shared an extensive background and education in artificial intelligence and bonded around a fundamentals-first approach to software development. The focus on good fundamentals led Black Diamond to a relationship with Rational Software in 1996. After years of successful partnership, Mr. Duncan and Mr. Howie formally joined forces in 1998 with the modest goal of growing Black Diamond into a larger consulting organization.

While the vision of the company was often re-invented as the IT marketplace evolved, the fundamentals-first value system and Rational technology remained a priority. A year before IBM’s acquisition of Rational Software, Black Diamond embarked on a plan to focus its service offerings around its deep experience and excellence in Rational technology. Shortly after Rational became IBM's fifth software brand, Wayne Langan, formerly of Rational, joined Black Diamond and began to formalize the company’s business development. Within a year, Black Diamond employed over fifty Rational experts and specialists executing Rational implementations and improving projects with IBM Rational technology. A track record of consistent quarterly growth continues today.
