Tiger et al. (2008) defined Functional Communication Training (FCT) as “a differential reinforcement (DR) procedure in which an individual is taught an alternative response that results in the same class of reinforcement identified as maintaining problem behavior”. It is one of the longest standing and most researched intervention procedures for challenging behavior, dating back to at least 1985. The present webinar begins by reviewing the basic FCT procedures, their relationship to functional assessment and analysis and the rationale for their use. The majority of the webinar provides a review of recent research refining the procedures and systematic reviews of the evidence for their effectiveness and acceptability. The webinar concludes with practitioner guidelines and solutions to common implementation problems.
