In this course, you will learn about the most basic form of elicited behavior, reflexes. Although commonly called “hard-wired” responses, reflexes can be changed through experience, such as the process of habituation. This course will cover the fundamentals, as well as some of the complexities, of habituation including dishabituation, spontaneous recovery, and sensitization. Using videos, learners will be able to observe the habituation and related processes occurring in a human. In addition, a guest lecture by Dr. Brady J Phelps and fluency-based learning modules are used to teach the course content.

 

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  •   Define habituation and related processes, such as dishabituation, spontaneous recovery, and sensitization.
  •   Identify examples of habituation and related processes.
  •   Define the startle and orienting reflex and describe how these are used in research on habituation.
  •   Identify an application of habituation in therapy.
