This session will apply behavior analytic thinking to the social categories called discrimination and prejudice. We’ll argue that discrimination in its social sense is closely related to our technical usage of the term (both depend on changes in behavior that depend on different consequences given different stimuli), and that prejudice(or pre-judgment) more often depends on verbal behavior that has been taught rather than on direct contact with contingencies. Verbal behavior makes it easier to spread and maintain prejudicial practices within a culture. We’ll consider implications, such as whether distinctions like this might be useful as we look for ways to ameliorate the damage produced by such social practices.

This session will apply behavior analytic thinking to the proliferation of the LGBTQIA+ vocabulary. Gender identity can vary along such continua as anatomy, behavior, and hormonal balance. Verbal behavior usually leads to discontinuous categories, but failure to recognize continuities leads to social clashes (e.g., consider the politics of the gender labelling of restrooms); it is also implicated in historical practices such as surgically “correcting” ambiguous genitalia in newborns, often without even informing the parents. We would do well to recognize and acknowledge the several dimensions along which sex/gender may vary.

This session will apply behavior analytic thinking about multiple causation to the accelerating rate of mass shootings in the United States over recent decades. Cumulative records illustrate the magnitude of the problem. When many causes come together, the effect of each is diluted and it becomes more difficult to establish any single causal relation; this poses a challenge to political solutions. But whatever the causes of any particular instance some may be more likely than others to raise the violent behavior about threshold. It may be useful to substitute arguments for how each variable may raise or lower the threshold for behavior such as gun violence for arguments that appeal to the primacy of some causes relative to others.

This LIVE WEBINAR will air on June 6 from 1:30 pm to 3:10 pm ET.
